Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for several hours when numerous of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations affecting six thousand travelers, with airport representatives alerting that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Border security stated that multiple atmospheric balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with a pair of them ending up right above the main terminal.
As many as 14 of the atmospheric instruments sent during the weekend drifted across the capital region, which is home to Lithuania's primary metropolis and near the border with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
A minimum of 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of black-market cigarettes have since been recovered, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to law enforcement authorities.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in neighboring countries."
So far this year, 544 balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Cross-Border Effects
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the balloons.
Smuggling Techniques
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a approach that remains particularly vulnerable to weather factors rather than simpler to operate drones, representatives elaborated that "Atmospheric equipment are basic instruments used by smugglers - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that such operations become unprofitable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of growing anxiety in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.
Recent incidents in nearby states have prompted European leaders to fast-track conversations about strengthening air defences throughout the continent.
