Users Discontinuing Weight-Loss Injections Gain Back Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Than Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

New research suggests that patients who stop using blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on reduced body mass far faster than those who halt conventional diet and exercise plans.

Findings released in a leading health publication demonstrates that while overweight individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Users using such treatments should be cognizant of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery implies a reversion to starting weight within about one and a half years.

Comparing Treatments

The analysis, which looked at dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the outcomes of these new drugs with other pills.

Scientists point out that people who shed pounds through dieting generally have a more gradual creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

Understanding the Quick Regain

Experts suggest the mode of action of the injections explains the accelerated regain.

These medications copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.

"Long-term administration of the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could diminish sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Withdrawal of this medication means hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating a significant risk."

A Chronic Issue?

Medical guidelines suggest the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

Many experts say that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment might need to be life-long.

This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "underscore the chronic nature of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

Patient Accounts

Individuals who have discontinued the medication report a powerful return of hunger.

"It was like a switch activating and I was suddenly starving," recalled an individual.

This difficulty is compounded if individuals have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Significant Adoption

Figures suggest that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.

  • Use is greater among females than men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, experts emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and maintained weight loss likely depends on ongoing behavioural support.
